Lune Valley Swifts Group

It’s been a busy summer for the group. During national Swift Awareness Week in July the Caton Institute kindly allowed us to set up a stand with information about Swifts and our conservation work, with a live link to a Swift nestcam! We also led an evening guided walk to watch the summer spectacle of Swift screaming parties flying low about buildings and darting in and out of nest sites.  Group members have also been carrying out surveys around the villages throughout the summer to identify where our Swifts are nesting. A huge thank you to all those that have taken part.

Our Swifts departed for Africa in early August, to return again to nest here next May, but in the meantime we have much to do! We are now buying Swift nest boxes for installation on community buildings, as well as other resources to make available to householders keen to help nesting Swifts, and we will also be piecing together a picture of the key areas for Swifts in our villages from the survey data collected. If you would like to find out more about the what we do, or would like advice on installing your own Swift nest box, please contact us on, or you can visit our Facebook page. You can also learn more online: search for ‘RSPB create a high home for swifts’.

Our September meeting will be on Tuesday 10th at 7.30pm in the Station Hotel, all welcome.
